Podding

Grace started using the OmniPod on Monday. No saline trial here, we jumped in head first with a 3 hour training and then put it on her within 30 minutes of her coming home from school. She was ready, we were ready. And I can honestly say the ride is pretty sweet so far. We have had higher numbers than normal this first week on the Pod, because we are still tweaking the basal rate she is on (0.35 units an hour) and also changing some carb ratios.

The automatic insertion is a blessing. Just having the OmniPod click it's little clicks, then 'swonk' the insertion is done. The anticipation of the insertion is what gets her. We are actually trying to count the number of clicks before the 'swonk' and tell me that's not a challenge. I think it's 4, it may be 5. Any which way, there are a few, then it's done. The anticipation of it is what gets her. The insertion she is fine with. My husband compared it to a roller coaster, you know it's gonna launch,  but doesn't the anticipation of 'when' just get you every time? There are a few tears, but honestly 30 seconds later the girl swears she cannot feel it at all.

Our trainer has us changing the Pod every two days. I think we will be fine at three, the length recommended to wear one and then change, but I am being the dutiful learner and complying with all orders (that's rare folks). The site looks great after she takes the Pod off - a little Eucarin calming cream on it and we are good to go, no marks, friction or anything. I was worried as she has a tad sensitive skin, but so far, all is well.

Can I tell you that I love the PDM? It talks plain English to me!

"Are you going to eat now?"
Why yes she is, thanks for asking!

"Check for ketones!"
Thanks for thinking of her and reminding me!

"Treat your low blood sugar now!"
Awwww, aren't you so conscientous!

"Bolus 2.25 for the 220 BGL and 40g of carbs?"
Gosh you are a math whiz you dear ole PDM you!

I love it. People can learn it. It likes me I think.

All is all, it's going well for Grace. I see that she has more freedom. I envision tighter control when we get these basal rates figured out for her. I see her more aware of her lows when we get that tighter control, cause she won't float in the 250 range for hours not having any background insulin.

It's all good.

Do you find it ODD that we are all talking to, having "affairs" with, and writing letters to inanimate objects??? - haha. I love that the POD "talks" to you...sounds cool. I haven't seen one in person. Joe is on the Animas Ping.

Good luck with the basals and ratios...and HAPPY PUMPING girl. It makes life so much easier in many ways. CONGRATS!!!

I'm so glad you like pumping! It was one of the best decisions we made. My daughter is on the One Touch Ping but I loved the Omni Pod too. The pods were just too big for my little girls body. Good luck!

I am so glad it is going well! We are about a week in on the Animas Ping and I sing praises all the the time too! Having something other than my tired, insufficient brain helping me figuring out dosing is a dream.
I hope Grace is loving it!

it is three clicks before it inserts the cannula. i'm 24 and still count them down! i exhale on the insertion click to help me remember not to tense up =)

I'm not sure why they have you changing every two days. That's more work and trouble and wasted insulin. Did she give you a reason?

It's after the third click. We count slowly:

one (pause), two (pause), three (pause), click.

We just started using the bolus calculator and I keep thinking we are forgetting to so something because it so much less math!

Happy podding!
