Where I win mother of the year & Wii saves my a$$

It was 1:00 pm and Grace's Pod expired at 2:05 pm. I knew that. We had checked. An odd time for her to have a pod change, as we save pod changes for nights, not to interfere with school days and such. Maybe that's what threw me.

We returned from errands and she called her neighbor girlfriend to play. "Sure, come on up" is what they said. A quick blood sugar check, a quick alignment from a slight high and off she trotted, two doors away. She doesn't take her PDM, but slips a juice into the front pocket of her hoodie.

"Back at 3:00 Mom!"
You would have thought that would have jarred something in my little brain.
It didn't.

I caught up on housework, cleaned up, you know, caught up on life.
Finally it was 3:05 pm.
I sat down on the couch and started to read the newspaper...
You see where this is headed, don't you?

My diabetes-man (make that the diabetes-woman) in my head alerted me.
It's 3-flippin-05-pm!!!
I shot like a cannon off the couch and dialed up the neighbor.
She answered their phone. Ahhhhhhh, gotta love caller ID.
"Hey mom, I was just gonna have my juice, I was feeling a little low."

"GET HOME NOW!! YOUR POD HAS EXPIRED!!!"

"What? I didn't even hear it. We've been dancing to Wii 'Just Dance' all this time. Ok, I'll have my juice and walk home."
Calm gal. And I am freaking OUT.

She walks home. Walks. Not even a one-minute hurried walk.
I am shaking.

"Hey, I didn't even hear it. Honest mom."
The pod is bleeping at her every 10 minutes. She has no insulin going into her system, for about an hour now.
I fully expect a 350, a 400, or the lovely HIGH.

67
Grace smiles. "I was dancing mom, all this time I was dancing."

We change the pod.
I am such a darn f-up.
And Wii saved my proverbial a$$.

You are not at all!

Do you know that the Pod works for 80 hours, 8 hours after the expiration time? It will remind you to change it hourly, but still deliver insulin. I've also been told by a user that it continues delivering basal through the never ending beep that goes off at the 80 hr mark until you shut it off. She woke up to that beep, after having slept through it for a couple hours and had regular bgs.

Ditto. I was just about to comment that it works another 8 hours and just keeps giving you the reminder beeps. If we have to do a change at a weird time I try to hold it off until our regular 4pm change if I can.

Glad it worked out ok :)

Yay Wii!

And this is why (or one of the many reasons why) I love the DOC... Lorraine and Leighann passing along a priceless bit of info that can help who knows how many.

And as for the diabetes man/woman living in your head... you need to name him or her. I have two and they are called Lenny and Harold. Gotta find the funny where you can with this disease!

Notice how we have so many alarms? The alarm clock, the PDM alarm, the wristwatch alarm, AND the alarm in our head. And, always, always, always, we can't predict what D will do at any particular time. We count our blessings every day, and learn from our experiences, don't we? - Mo

First of all you are an awesome mom! It was a mistake anyone could have made. Secondly I love Just Dance! We rented it at Blockbuster and we are going to buy it we love it so much! The whole family gets into it. I have found a great indoor work out for myself during this yucky weather!

Girl - I forget all of the time. I'm glad Lo filled you in on the 80 hour rule. I often let it go until 80hours - especially if we get off schedule. I'm like you I prefer to do pod changes in the evening but if we lose a pod or have to an afternoon change on the next one I will let it go longer so I can get back on schedule. After 80 hours - you will want to throw it out in the pool or the closest body of water because it will not shut-up!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tell Grace - we love Wii over here too! just Dance rocks!

Lorraine and Leighann,
How did I not know my gal's insulin pump works beyond the expiration time? I must have slept through that part of the training. Sure enough, upon reading my OmniPod manual, the Pod does.
Now I feel like I don't even know what's going on...
Thanks gals, as always the DOC comes on through!

YOU.ARE.ALWAYS.MOTHER.OF.THE.YEAR!!That is cool to find out on the pod. I was thinking that the pod kind of sucked during your post if it would just stop giving insulin when it was supposed to be changed. I guess it doesn't suck.
